The New President – Mr. W. P. Turner
The new President of the Mexborough Montagu Hospital. Mr. W. P. Turner, of “The Beeches.” Swinton, is very well known in the area served by the Hospital.
Mr. Turner has been a member of the Board of Management for several years and has always shown a lively interest in the welfare of the Hospital. As Managing Director of the “South Yorkshire Times” he has at all times shown himself ready to place this paper’s influence and resources at the disposal of the Hospital cause, and has been instrumental in obtaining in this way much practical support for the institution.
The Coronation Appeal which brought in £4,400 to the coffers of the Hospital and cleared off the existing debt was a scheme of his devising and received his energetic personal backing, while in January, 1928. he provided ultraviolet ray apparatus at the Hospital as a memorial to his father, the late Mr. Walter Turner, founder of the “South Yorkshire Times.”
A prominent sportsman in his younger days. Mr. Turner played both cricket and football for Mexborough and his prowess as a centre-forward and as a forceful left-hand batsman will be familiar to many members of the older generation throughout the district. Later he gave valued support to the Mexborough Athletic Club (of which he was made a life member) and Mexborough Football Club off the field and was among those who helped to keep the Midland League flag flying in the town in the face of many difficulties.
Mr. Turner is a founder member and past-President of the Mexborough and District Rotary Club, and is also President of Swinton Nursing Association and chairman of the Mexborough Local Association of Boy Scouts. He was for twelve years voluntary organist and choirmaster, at the Parish Church. Mexborough and later held a similar position at Swinton Parish Church.
His many business connections include directorships in the Sheffield Poster Advertising Company. Mexborough Investment Co. and Mexborough Development Co. He is also President of the Yorkshire and Northern Poster Advertising Association. President of the Mexborough and District Master Printers’ Association, a member of the Institute of Journalists and a member of the Committee of the Yorkshire Newspaper Society.
