Well-Known Mexborough Teacher

Sudden Collapse in Street

Mrs. Dora Haigh, wife of Mr. Oscar Haigh, master painter and decorator, of 45, Adwick Road, Mexborough, collapsed and died on Monday Mrs. Haigh, who was 58, had been out with her husband when the collapse occurred, and she was taken into a house. She did not regain consciousness.

For 35 years she had been a member of the teaching profession, and at the time of her death was on the teaching staff at Rawmarsh Dale Road School. She had previously taught at Adwick Road School, Mexborough, and at Garden Street, and was at one time at the old Central School, now Dolcliffe Road School, Mexborough.

A letter of condolence has been received from the Divisional Clerk, on behalf of Rawmarsh Education Sub-Committee.

Mrs. Haigh, who is described as having been “keenly interested in her work, and very fond of the children under her care:’ associated herself prominently with amateur operatic society work and played at Mexborough in both “The Mikado” and “The Gondoliers.”  She was associated with the Mexborough Amateur Operatic Society for a god many years, and in the life of the township was always found a willing helper for any social cause.

A well-known violinist, Mr. Haigh has also been prominently associated with the Operatic Society. and his son, Mr. Charles Beldan Haigh, of Sheffield, follows in his footsteps as a musician. He is a Bachelor of Music. There is also one daughter, Mrs. T. R. Hurst. also of Sheffield.

Mrs. Haigh’s death comes as a sudden and tragic shock to the family, as she was to have retired next year. Mr. and Mrs. Haigh were to have lived at Bridlington. The funeral is on Saturday at Mexborough cemetery at 3 p.m.
