Soldier – Thornton, Jesse – Killed by Enemy Shell

November 1918

Mexborough and Swinton Times November 2, 1918

Lance Corporal Jesse Thornton
York and Lancaster

Lance Corporal Jesse Thornton, Rockingham house, Herbert Street, Mexborough, was killed by an enemy shell on October 5.

He was 23 years of age and had been in France two and half years. His parents have received the following letter from second Lieutenant H.J.Snelling: this

“Your dear son was killed by an enemy shell last night doing his duty as a signaller. He did not suffer, as his death was instantaneous. It is not the fallen suffer, but the loved’s one’s life behind, and while I offer my deepest sympathy to you, I trust that God, Who in spite of all He calls to endure is a God of Love and Strength, will comfort you and strengthen you in this your sad and sudden bereavement.

He has not been under me long, but I found him a trustee and willing soldier, and I trust that your loss will be his gain.”

Letters of sympathy have also been received from Lance Corporal Thorn comrades.

Lance Corporal Thornton was before enlistment, employed in Hunters stores Mexborough, and was widely known both the Mexborough and Swinton. He was a member of the choir of St Michael and all Angels, Swinton, and of the Swinton branch of the Church of England Men’s Society.

A service in his memory will be held in the Mexborough Parish Church on Sunday afternoon at 4.
