Street Betting Convictions at Doncaster.

Two cases of street betting were heard at he the Doncaster West Riding Court to-day, William Parker, collier, Mexbro’, being summoned for betting near the Crossing Saturday. 18th ult.

P-C. Metcalf, who was in plain clothes, was in the Doncaster Road, Denaby, at two o’clock, when saw defendant, standing amongst other men, two of whom were looking at a sporting paper. The two men handed him money, which he put in his inside jacket pocket, and gave them change out of his trousers pocket. He wrote something on blank slips of paper and gave a paper to each man.

This proceeding was repeated in other cases, and the officer followed the defendant two the Don Bridge and charged him, when he replied “Weil, it’s the first time I’ve done it.”

He had two sporting papers on him, and also slips of paper showing that various bets had been mode and money paid out.

A fine of £5 and was imposed.

In the second case Joseph Parker, collier, Mexborough was the defendant and the offence took place on Wednesday, the 22nd, on Swinton Rd, Mexborough.

Sergeant Wressell so men make bets with the defendant and when searched 17s. 6d. in silver was found upon him, also a sporting paper, and concealed inside the lining of his jacket were 30 blank slips of paper and four slips with writing on relating to racing.

Defendant, who did not appear, had told the officer that he should not attend. The Chairman said, “As does not come he will be fined £5 including costs.”

Four Negroes Lynched.

A New York telegram from Russellville, Kentucky states that four negroes have been taken from the gaol and lynched.
